We cordially invite you to a lecture by Dr. Marcian Stasiak of Jagellonian University in Kraków, which will take place on 19 April at 4 pm in room YC001, Veleslavín (José Martího 31, Prague 6).


Socialist city: Nowa Huta - idea, people and everyday life

The lecture will be focused on the most important issues concerning Nowa Huta - a completely new city (together with huge steelworks) built in the outskirts of Krakow in the 1950's. The political, economical and ideological background will be discussed. I will also show the daily life of the Nowa Huta builders and inhabitants as well as the major political events taken place in Nowa Huta during communist period.


The lecture will be illustrated by 35 minute documentary: "Moja Nowa Huta" ("My New Huta"). The movie consists of pieces of 12 interviews with who have lived and worked in Nowa Huta.


Dr. Stasiak is a social and cultural historian working across the fields of disability studies, sports history and oral history. He recently published (with Marta Kurkowska-Budzan) a book: Stadion na Peryferiach ("Stadium in Peripheries").
